Study Permit Extension and Passport Expiry

Hi,
Just want to confirm how to go about extending my study permit. I am planning to enroll in another program starting this Fall 2021 and it will take 2 years to finish. My study permit will expire in December 2021 and my passport on November 2022. I've read that the study permit will not extend past the expiry of my passport, so I will have to renew my passport prior to applying for study permit extension, correct?

(Will also inquire with the embassy how early I am allowed to renew my passport)
