I files my tax return for the year 2010 on February 15th 2011. How much time does it take for the assessment to be carried out? When can I ask CRA for the option C print out?
This is not my first tax return. I have to file an application for spouse sponsorship this year and need option C printout. I was told that this cannot be provided unless and until I get assessment of my tax.
I will be grateful if someone provides information about the time taken by these.
You will note that the application allows for a letter explaining why there is no Option C included. I didn't include one and was still approved for sponsorship.
That said, tax returns filed early (before the end of February) are usually processed quickly. Did you NETFILE, TeleFile, or do it by paper? If you NETFILEd, you should have a Notice of Assessment heading your way within a week (based on my past experience). If you filed by paper, who knows. I know they've been scaling back the paper processing dramatically over the past few years.
Once you have your Notice of Assessment, requesting an Option C can apparently be done in person at a CRA office and you can walk out with it then. Otherwise, you can phone in and you're at the whim of CanadaPost, but usually a week or two, as I understand it.
