question plss
in writing section sgall i write in pen or pencil , just note that always using pen is there is any benefit for using pencil?
what kind of pencil?
thanks
zakout
A soft pencil is recomended.
I prefer a pen-pencil with lead thckness 0.7mm. 0.5mm is too sharp, might tear the answer sheeet.
Which ever u are comfortable. If you are sure, you won't make mistakes and won't need to erase & re-write, you can use PEN.

I had my IELTS test today and it went fine.
I finished reading about 5 mints and writing task about 20 mints ahead of time.
Listening was quite difficult as it contained a number of MCQz.
My speaking is on 20 July.
cheers

I confess it. Listening was tough this time around for the above mentioned reason by hasnaat.
I messed up in the reading section for sure. I need a lot of prayers for this section. Writing section went a bit okay. This time I felt like I did not do justice in the writing section because of the time constraints.
Today I had my speaking section with AEO (Australian Education Office who conducts IELTS tests along with British Council)in Karachi.
Once I was done with speaking. The examiner gave back to me a very nice smile.
So I am not expecting less than 7 in speaking in any case. Questions were different for each applicant. ( a couple of applicants were asked about food and their favorite music).
In my case
Part 1:
What is your full name?
Can I see your identification please?
What do you do in your free time?
What is your favorite colour and why?
Do you wear clothes in your favorite color?
In which colours would you like to paint your room walls and why?
Do girls and boys follow the same relaxation techniques?
Do you like to spend your free time by watching TV or with friends?
Why do you like to live in your city?
What entertaintment activities people follow in your city?
What things should be improved in your city?
Part 2:
What was your favorite subject at high school?
What teacher was like
Why did you like the subject?
Follow up questions:
Did your classmates like the same subject?
Why do boys choose subjects like Engineering or Science?
Do boys and girls choose the the same subjects at high school?
Does a method of teaching by a teacher affects students take interest in the subjects?
Part 3:
How students do choose their fields at the university level?
Should there be admission counslors or advisors?
Should courses be updated at local universities in line with international standard?
How do students find out jobs after finishing their higher studies in your country?
Should subjects like enviornment should be taught at local universities?
Interview lasted around 15 minutes I believe. I spoke constantly so I felt like I was a bit tired at the the end.
The right strategy is to speak and speak. I spoke normally and did not pack my sentences with too many hard words kept them simple and threw in words like amiable, accentuate, top-notch, etc here and there

IELTS result ,17 July2010
l:7.0
W:7.0
R:6.5
S:7.0
overall,7.0
I am not sent my results yet, I have taken via British Council
Brother Asad,
You are consistent in your results 8)
Let me know where do you apply for higher studies
This is your third attempt I suppose.
How are you feeling,

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S
Final comments:
I actually bought two books Cambridge 5 & 6 for practice one week before the test.
Because of laziness I was able to take practice tests from only book 5.
I prepared for the test in two days.
. I had gone through reading practice tests on july 15 and listening practice tests on july 16.
I tackled them individually. I completed 4 practice tests from book 5.
I did not practice at all for both writing and speaking sections. Just famaliarized myself with vocabulary that is normally used in descrbing graphs and charts..etc words like much steeper, remained constant, nosedive, decrease/increase/stable..etc
This time I followed Matlal's approach, tackled reading section from passage 3,2,1.
Why did I use the word "mess up for reading section"?
I had only two minutes left and I had to answer 8 questions. Approach was good because I didn't have to handle fill in the blank type questions in the endbecause if time is short I can't even guess for such type of questions. It was a nice idea to take a quick look at the type of questions in each passage and see
which type of questions you can handle easily and make up your own mind.
I guessed 8 questions randomly (1-6 Q's true/false/Not Given), (7-8, matchin statements with respective scientists who had actually said those statements).
I 'd have performed much better in the reading section if I had had good time management skills and did not do guesswork.
Take practice tests under test condtions.
Overall, I'm happy with my overall score considering my preparation. However, such lousy preparation will only work for those who haveadvanced language skills. Otherwise I'd recommend that applicants take as many practice tests as possible.
One word of caution: Ielts test makers had obviously improved their test standards. I was asked about 30 questions in speaking section. Listening wasdefinitely tough this time around. Lots of MCQ's were asked. Given options for answers were pretty long sentences.
You must take some practice tests before taking an actual test. IELTS is all about time managment. If you wasted too much time on unnecessarystuff you would not perform well even though your language skills are top-notch.

How are you feeling,
I believe scoring over 7.0+ is defnitely possible but it is not easy for those
who are not surrounded by English 24/7. Like I haven't lived in an English speaking country or haven't worked there.
I don't speak, listen and write all the time. However, I do reading on a regular basis but not
academic in nature.
That's why I have been consistent in my results. Most Universities don't require more than 7.0 band for all their academic programs.
I'm satisfied not overly happy as I used to score band 7.0 in my last two attempts. I defnitely felt overjoyed in my first attempt, though.
I did not expect 7 band in my first attempt.
It is my third attempt as my previous scores were expired.
I will apply for Canada for my higher studies. IELTS is just a small part of my visa application. I'll need to take care of other aspects of the application like
home ties, nature of course,etc.
I'm just satisfied that I have not wasted so much money on test preparations like taking classes with IELTS centers, buying a lot of books, and so on.
Given my two days preparation, I'm happy with my overall score.
Listening 6

Reading 6.5

Writing 6.5 8)
Speaking 7
Overall Band 6.5
All praises to Allah, I am happy and satisfied with my endeavors.
Hip Hip Hurray
I know i had made some spelling mistakes in Listening but I was expecting quite high for Reading section.
Writing and Speaking are Alhamdulilah alright.
All praises to Allah .... 8)
Asad,
Good Job !! You have scored 14 points, which is really good.
