study less than 6 months

I read that if studying for less than 6 months, we are still asked to apply for a study permit. It said to apply as if studying for more than 6 months but then to fill in the actual dates of study on the form as the proper dates (less then 6 months)
my brother in law is looking at taking some esl classes for a couple months and then a 1 week long speacialized training course.

Does this mean one must also do biometrics even if studying less than 6 months?

Yes he will need biometrics since he is applying for a study permit.
