This has been mentioned NUMEROUS times on the forum but I will mention it again.
Your PR status and PR card are completely different entities. Your PR card expiry has no bearing on your PR status and needless to say, no bearing on your SIN, work in Canada or your Citizenship application.

Just wondering if I don't lose my PR status is there a need to renew my PR card or can I just let it expire and wait however long for my citizenship application to go through? I guess I would not be able to travel outside of Canada without it that would be the only thing right?

You only need your PR card if you are planning to travel outside Canada and wish to come back on a commercial carrier. That is, you can leave Canada without a PR card but to get back in on a flight, for instance, you need a PR card or a PRTD (Permanent Resident Travel Document).
