Passport Expiry before IEC Visa End

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out with a conundrum. I currently hold an Australian passport that expires in June 2020. I have an IEC visa that will be activated when I enter Canada on 7th July 2019 which means it is valid until well after my passport expiry. I am only working seasonally and will be flying out of Canada back home in October 2019 and plan to enter the country again from July-Oct in 2020. My question is - if I have my return flight out of Canada in October 2019, do I still need to renew my passport in order for my visa to still be valid for the following year? Obviously I will have a renewed passport in 2020, but wouldn't get it renewed this year if it's not required for my first visit. I hope this makes sense and someone is able to clarify.

Your work permit will NOT be issued beyond passport expiry. It will only be valid to June 2020 and there are no extensions for IEC. If you want to be able to work beyond June 2020, you need to renew your passport now before activating your work permit.

Also see here below although advice still stands that if you can renew your passport before travel this year then do it given process below is via a paper application only, can take 4-5 months and usually requires a Canadian address for any hardcopy correspondance. Basically a lot of hassle and the form is as with many IRCC forms being generic can be confusing to complete, whereas getting a new passport just removes the stress of will they wont they process.

Thanks for your very clear advice. It is not possible for me to renew my passport before Canada as there is no Australian Consulate on the island where I am living, and unfortunately I have to present myself at one in order to renew my passport. I will have to try the extension of the IEC Visa as suggested as it's my only option. Would I apply for this after I have returned home in October 2019 and had a chance to renew my passport? Thanks again for the response.
