My passport expires in May 3rd, so it will be 6 months on November 3rd. We should be getting DM any moment now (Jan '15 applicant) so it will be tight. But my embassy is in BC (I'm in Alberta) plus they're quite useless and it will take months to renew it.
Question at the end is: Will there be a problem if when I get my PPR my passport is expiring in lest say: 5 1/2 months ??
I think this answers your question more accurately:
Important Notice about Visa and Passport Validity
You should ensure that everyone in your family has a passport valid for a minimum of 12 months from the date of the most recent full medical examination. Visa can only be issued to a maximum of 12 months from the date of your most recent Immigration Medical Examination assessment. It is your interest to obtain new or updated paasports to ensure permanent resident visas are issued with maximum validity
It also states in the PPR mail, check the expiry of the passports for you and your accompanying family members, Permanent Resident visas for Canada cannot be issued with a validity longer than the passport

According to other members here, they will send you back your passport and ask you to renew it.
I searched because mine expires in 5 months. Even if it expires in 1 month, the border is like 1 hour away from where I live so I wouldn't mind having a visa valid for even a few days. However, after some research, I have now to get a new passport.
Even i had same situation, my passport was expiring in March 23rd and i am waiting for PPR. so i got my passport renewed in Sep 3rd week and got it renewed. now waiting for PPR with peace
you can apply for passport renewal now
If in case u get PPR request prior to new Passport issue, you can always change the normal renewal you requested as tatkal and get your passport by one day by submitting the PPR letter to Indian Embassy.
But still for international travel you still need to comply with more than 6 mos. validity in your passport. If I were you the best you can do is ask for your passport validity extension, you tell your country of origin where you renew paasport or if you are abroad your embassy, that it is just urgent and they will extend the validity of your passport for up to 2 yrs at most while in parallel waiting for your passport renewal. Typically, you will get it within the day, but it depends on your embassy policies.
