Apparently, that ghost update on the 29th was the background check. The tracker now shows "Updated: December 1" and it says background verification completed on 29 November under application history.

Same thing happened to me. I got a ghost update on the 29th, and I just saw that my background check was completed in the tracker today (dec 1st). I received another email saying "Follow the progress of your application", does that mean I will receive another update in a couple days?

Yes, your tracker will show you need to do citizenship test and give you the timeline when the test is open. Following that, you will receive the test invitation in your email.
Yes, it shows that the Citizenship Test was completed and it is highlighted in green just like my BG check. It also shows under the update section. Below is what I see on my tracker.

I completed the test on Nov 27th (the same day as I was invited for the test). I got a ghost update this morning but it doesn't show the test completed. it also deleted the paragraph on the tracker saying that the test is waiting on you..

Tracker data gets updated 2-3 days after the actual update. give it 2 or 3 days and you will see what it really is. Source: Got my citizenship this October, still stalking the forum for my wife's citizenship. It was like that for me all the way to the end. Even after the oath it took 2 days for it to say it's finished.
