is it worth taking OCI for child who is 6months old ? because we have to renew passport every 5 years.. also is it true that fee for OCI is 425$ and every 5years we just need to renew OCI by paying 25$ renew fee until child is 20 years old?

You are right about the OCI Fees being 425$. Since a child's passport if of 5 years validity only, with every passport change you will have to renew the OCI card too. The BLS website shows 43$ for reissuance of the OCI card.
https://www.blsindia-canada.com/ocihome.php

Assuming that the child is in Canada now, I wouldn't suggest getting an OCI unless your plan is to raise the child in India at least for a couple of years.
If the child was born and currently in India then I would wait for someone with similar experience to share their thoughts.

All the best!

The child is in Canada. If we plan to visit India every year it is 85$ for visitor visa per visit... which into 20 years will cost 85$ X 20 .... but if I get OCI, it will cost 425$ plus 43$ every 5 years so it makes sense to get OCI. Pls correct me if I am wrong ?

Hi, can someone please help me by answering this question?

I applied for an OCI for my 6-month-old baby, but it got rejected because they are not accepting our marriage certificate. I’m from Bangalore, India. As Muslims, we obtained our marriage certificate through the Waqf Board in Bangalore. This certificate has been accepted everywhere else as valid proof of marriage—even for my Canadian spousal visa and permanent residency application.

However, when I applied for an OCI for my child, it was rejected on the grounds that the Waqf Board marriage certificate is not considered a valid marriage certificate. Has anyone successfully applied for an OCI using a Waqf Board marriage certificate?

You need to have the certificate attested local authorities in Bangalore first and then with the Ministry of External Affairs

Why do we need that?
Waqf works as government body in banaglore and that certificate is attested, it's not like qazis certificate.

Not yet. They currently rejected the waqf certificate. Getting registered with indian act takes time may b 2 months and it is only possible if we travel india and we both husband and wife should b present to submit and collect the marriage certificate from court.

My brother lives in the USA. He also has a marriage certificate from the Waqf Board, and he successfully applied for OCI for both his kids using that certificate.

Did you go through this process and received OCI successfully?
Yes but in my case I got married in India, whereas around that time I used to live in Dubai.
I had to apply for UAE residency for my spouse and I had to get the following attestation done:
  1. A Govt Officer
  2. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
  3. UAE Embassy in India
  4. UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Now if you remove the UAE portion out of this equation the other part i.e. Attestation by the MEA would still be required..

Fast Forward, I and family (including children) applied for OCI back in Dec 2022 and received OCI in Feb 2023

My next door neighbor here is originally from Kerala. A year or so ago he wanted to apply for OCI for his spouse under the who was Indian by descent by was born and brought up here in Canada (never had an Indian passport). Their marriage was done back home in India, but when he applied for the OCI for spouse BLS and CGI gave them a tough time because the marriage certificate (they are a Christian cpl) had not been attested by the MEA.
In the end they ended up getting the attestation done by MEA and then CGI told his spouse why didn't you apply for OCI on the basis of your parent's(as they were ex Indian citizens moved here in the 80s):D

Waqf might be what you called, but for the Indian mission in a foreign country to recognize the documents issued in India an attestation is required by MEA

You and your neighbor got married in India and had a Nikah Nama, right? Given that, didn't you apply for a marriage certificate in India itself?
Not sure if you read my previous msg..
The document I got at the time of marriage was called Certificate of Marriage issued by the Imam/local priest of the mosque. This document I attested as per the what I mentioned in my previous msg.

My neighbor here is a Christian, so Nikah Nama is not something they would get.
