It works right now on mobile for me. On PC, if you use the network inspector in your browser, you'll see it's an error coming back from their CloudFront CDN. I believe the error is technical in nature (as a Software Architect), and not a hack.

Hmm. The form says "Note: Copies of Canadian citizenship certificates are accepted if the certificate number begins with a K or an X."
Could someone who got a paper certificate recently tell me what theirs starts with? I'm back to not knowing whether or not most people can submit a copy of a paper certificate.

My spouse's paper cert starts with K, we submitted passport application in person and showed the certificate

Nice, so hopefully most people, if mailing, could mail a copy of the paper certificate, removing one of the benefits of the e-certificate.

For family member: starts with a K. Also has barcodes at the bottom (for both certificate # and date of birth).
I wrote somewhere here recently that I thought they would do exactly this: that the 'paper' certificates would be accepted in copy because clearly they'd been designed for digital usage. I even guessed that they'd just limit the copy usage for ones of a certain series/issued after a certain date.
And if so: advantage of an e-certificate over a paper one is precisely zero, it seems.
So I'm going with: confirmed.

I agree. It seems like a high-quality scan of a paper certificate, backed up, would serve the same purpose as an e-certificate, at this point.
However, I'm still happy with my forever-"perfect" e-certificate PDF.
Does the physical certificate have any distinctive features, like special color changing ink/holograms/embossing or anything? I'm thinking about having mine printed in high quality at a print shop and framing it.

Do you consider colour a special feature?
I only have a scan as I was asked to do that. I don't recall in detail the rest. If it has special features, it's nothing as elaborate as the passport biopages.
I do recall the front page is a b**** to scan in blakc and white, it has a complex background - basically has to be greyscale or colour. The second page is fine, and of course the barcodes will be fine in B&W though. (The front page is the pretty ceremonial bit, only functional bits are the name of bearer and the certificate# -both of which are on the back.)
I've not yet seen an e-certificate so can't compare.

My e-certificate is the exact same as you described, except there's no "back". It's just page 2.
When thinking about printing to frame it, I was thinking about doing it side by side, since the top of page 2 has the oath in both languages and "This certificate is evidence that the person named hereon is a Canadian citizen." below it and then all my UCI / certificate # stuff.
The background on page 1 I can see would be a problem to scan. It's a light blue gradient with white fleur de lis.

It sounds to me like they're identical in the main except for, you know, the dimensionality required for a 'back'. The physical is a sort of beige and I can't see the gradient well enough from the scan to say - so the colour scheme and that kind of thing may be different.
Anyway, it sounds like the e-certificate could be printed up to look quite nice on paper; someone who knows how to print things well and get the right vibrancy and look of the colours (like the red maple leaf) and physicality out of it (things like thickness of paper).
