I got admission letter from both. Here's the description of each program:
Simon Fraser University:
1) MENGG
2) Max duration of program: 3 years
3) 13800$ tuition for the entire course (distributed over 2-3 years, depending upon completion time you take)
4) Freedom of choosing course load. one course or two course per semester.
Queen's University:
1) MENGG ECE
2) Duration of program: 1 year (8 months)
3) 15000$ tuition per year.
4) Course completion time 1 year. If you don't complete in one year, you'll have to enroll in the next term and pay fee for it
So based on these facts, I wish to enroll in SFU because of relaxed payment terms, more duration of program and hence more duration of work permit etc. But SFU ranks in 280s in the QS ranking and I dont have idea of the SFU job market on an MENG degree (no major specified, but all the courses are electronic and communication related). Queen's on the other hand demands more fees, gives less time but ranks 178 in Qs ranking. I dont have idea about its job market either. The degree offered is MENG (ECE).
I think Queen's ECE MENG duration is 1 year, but the course is to be completed in eight months.
This is from ECE's website:
The obtain the M.Eng. degree, the department requires the following: A total of eight term-length graduate courses with a maximum of two fourth-year level undergraduate courses. Further requirements include: a) four term-length graduate courses must be courses offered in the Department, b) two of the courses in (1) may be replaced by ELEC-898 - M.Eng. Project, c) normally, the remaining courses may be chosen from courses listed by the Department, or from courses offered by another Department in Queen's University or from Royal Military College and d) the student must select at least one course that contains a project if not selecting the project course ELEC-898. A list of courses containing projects is maintained by the Department and we must must approve all the course selections
For the courses only option, it is expected that the student will complete the program in eight months (two terms). There are no courses offered in the Spring/Summer term in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen's University. Tuition is based on a program fee rather than a per-course fee and is charged over a 12 month period. Therefore if a student does not complete the program in the required two terms, he or she will be charged fees for the Spring/Summer term even though the student is not registered in any courses.
NOTE: We only take applications for the program for September entry and no funding is offered for this program.
what will you say......that whether one should give preference to ranking of a university only or one should also think for the duration of the programme.....?
Go for the university that you feel comfortable in. Don't just run after ranking of the univs. Look at the area, part time job facilities, the work permit you wud be getting post graduation and ofcourse which you can afford. You look more inclined towards SFU.
