I'm confused on the eligibility of implied status.
I applied for inland spousal sponsorship and included a work permit application as part of the package. My current IEC visa will. Expire next month, and conditions of inland require me to maintain legal status in Canada. So here's my question, do I need to apply for a tourist visa (I'm British) to remain here, or do I have implied status but cannot work, as I have a new permit in process.

When your IEC expires you will have implied status (as a visitor).
You don't HAVE to apply for visitor status no (no such thing as tourist visa in your case) but you should be mindful about the risk of falling out of status.
When your IEC permit expires yes you will have implied status as you have and inland app/OWP app submitted.
Falling out of status could happen if for some reason your application/OWP app is returned to you for an error. Meaning your implied status is no longer valid/in effect and you haven't maintained your visitor status. Something that may seem unlikely but is all too common.
The risk of falling out of status can be eliminated by still applying to switch to visitor status when your IEC expires next month, if you haven't heard anything on your pr app/OWP app. You didn't say when you sent in those apps or if you have had kind of communication from CIC on them.
Visitor status apps can be submitted right up until the day before your current status expires.
Since you have received correspondence from CIC about linking your app and requesting your schedule A...everything is fine with your application(s) (submission wise) and your app(s) won't be returned..so your implied status will be sufficient to carry you through until you receive your open work permit.
You MUST however stop working when your IEC permit expires. You have implied visitor status when that expires NOT implied "worker" status.
Being from the uk it wouldn't have been called a tourist visa. Should you have needed to apply for visitor status; that is what it would have been called and you would have been issued a "visitor record" in your visitor application approval.
