Flagpoling vs IRCC office appointment to land

A few questions regarding landing:
1. Is flagpoling still a "valid" way to land? I plan on crossing to the US and back in order to land for my PR and I'm from a visa-required country so I'd have to get a US visa to do it the "right way", but the US visa department warns people that it may be difficult to qualify for a visa outside of your place of permanent residence. Do people still flagpole, and does it still work, or nay? I'd be crossing at Sumas.

2. According to CIC, you can make an appointment at an IRCC office near where you live in Canada to be admitted to Canada as a permanent resident. Is this something they schedule you in for or can you contact them to book an appointment?

1. Yes - valid. You don't need a US visa to flagpole. When you get to the other side you simply tell the US officials you're flagpoling and they allow you to turn around and head back to Canada.
2. You have to request yourself. Take take a number of weeks (even a couple of months sometimes) to get an appointment.
