From what I read, if you apply by mail, you need to submit original and it will be returned to you. If you apply in person, the agent will take a look at it and return it to you on the spot.

It depends, some people the next day, others within two to three weeks. Check the tracker spreadsheet. Some unfortunate ones could take months if their application warrants further examination after the interview (i.e. frequent travel, agent suspicious .. etc)
