Thanks. I'm in contact with one particular person who is apparently liaising with DHL in Canada. I've asked them to just divert it now to my partner's parent's house and I will ask them to send it via Canada Post instead.
I'm hoping it will be sorted by tomorrow. I very rapidly losing the plot!
Ok. DHL have just called. Basically everything they have told me up until now was wrong. The reason that it hasn't been delivered is because they used my insured value as the value of the contents when it was processed through customs. So when they have tried to deliver the package they have tried to charge import duty and CIC have obviously refused to pay.
They are going to sort out the customs charge and then try and deliver again.
So hopefully it will be done today or tomorrow.
We are getting there......

What amount did you value it at?
£400. I figured this would be the cost for me to get all the original documents again. Looking back, I wish I'd put zero but hey ho. Hopefully my experience will help other people not make my mistake.
Ahhh, too bad DHL didn't explain that in the first place. At least now you know the problem and it will get sorted. Hope it gets there today.

Good point.
It seems like things should move along now.
Good (better) luck with the application

Thank you both. We are starting to feel (a bit) better!
We'll hopefully get a proper night's sleep once it has been delivered.

A very nice man, also called Oliver phoned me from DHL in Toronto. He said they have waived the customs fee and all I need to do is pay a small $7.00 processing fee.
I have given them my credit card details so hopefully it's all sorted now.
Thanks for all your support. Hopefully the most stressful part is over, but I have a feeling there is more to come...!
And I must say that it looks like it was my fault all along and DHL have actually been very helpful on the phone.

don't forget next time not to include insurance value.......
thanks for sharing!! good to know for me and other ones...but what confuses me is if u put insurance value 0 then in case they loose it then u'll get no refund at all??? but if u put something then will u risk of not being delivered?? that's tricky
Exactly my thoughts. It is also complicated for us because me and my Canadian partner are currently living on a really small island off the coast of England. So if we need to go to the DMP again, or visit another Notary, we will need to fly to the mainland by helicopter which will cost £370 for us both. So before we can even start spending money to get the original documents again, it has already cost us an arm and a leg!
It seems crazy to have zero insurance.
Ollie
good point!! but still the main responsible is DHL they should know this stuff and they should have told u that if u declare higher than a specific amount the one receiving will have to pay extra charges..
still good to hear that this nightmare is almost over...maybe they will receive ur package today

Yay! The parcel was signed for yesterday afternoon at 15:27 by 'Lois'.
Thanks again for all your help.
I must be fair to DHL and say they have been excellent with customer service.
