My partner right now was sponsored by his ex-wife here in Canada, they had a divorce but both of them are not Canadian citizens, I know that Phillipines doesn't recognize divorce unless one of them is a citizen by the time the divorce has been finalized. Now my partner is planning to apply for citizenship so that we can get married legally, but he is worried because of the condition on his PR. Since coming to Canada he never got to live with his ex-wife because she got pregnant with another man's child, and he was left alone to support himself. Nobody told him that he can report to the embassy about him being abandoned since he doesn't have any relatives here aside for his ex-in laws so he just moved on with his life and always put separated as his status. Does he need a lawyer to gelp him apply his citizenship or he can just do it by himself with no problem? And will the Philippines recognize his divorce once he gets to become a citizen or does he need to file another divorce, his ex is still a PR but already got married.

His partner should have ended the sponsorship if they were separated before he landed in Canada. Yes this certainly could come up when he applied for citizenship. If he didn’t move to Canada to live with his spouse he should never have qualified for sponsorship in the first place.
