I was born in India and am currently working in US on H1B visa. I will move to Toronto, Canada next year. I had following questions regarding immigration:
1. Can I apply for US Green card (permanent residence) now and move to Canada next year with my US application pending?
2. Can I apply for Canadian citizenship next year eventhough my application in US might be pending at that time.
3. Can I have citizenship from India, US and Canada at the same time. If not, where should I apply first, US or Canada.
To qualify for Canadian citizenship, you must first become a permanent resident - and must then live in Canada for three out of the last for years before you are eligible to apply. If you are moving to Canada next year for the first time, it will be a few more years before you can apply for citizenship.
Sure - you can apply for Canadian PR at the same time.
Sooner or later you'll probably have to make a choice between maintaining Canadian PR and the US Green Card. Both have residency requirements and it's very difficult to satisfy both simultaneously.
