Can someone please help to understand what all benefits are available and how those can be claimed ?
I am going to deliver my first child soon. Me and my spouse arrived in Toronto, Canada June 2016 and have been living since then here.
May I know what will all benefits I can claim
My husband is working as a full time, I am working as a contractor.
- Can the benefits be claimed only after having a child or it can be started before birth as well ?
- What if the child is born outside of Canada ? Do we still get any benefits ? How ?
If you have 600 hours of employment in the past year, and have been paying into EI, you can register for maternity leave EI before the child is born. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/ei/ei-maternity-parental/eligibility.html
Only after the child is born can you apply for the Canada Child Benefit. https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/campaigns/canada-child-benefit.html.
- What if the child is born outside of Canada ? Do we still get any benefits ? How ?
You'll get the monthly child benefit only when you move with the child back to Canada. If the child is born outside Canada, you'll also need to sponsor them for PR.
