Finally got a reply back via email to my automated status check request (sent last month) with the following reply: Your file is in examination.

Does that mean the application has been picked up and being processed?

No. there is nothing much to examine. sorry for being so blunt.

Yeah no worries, at least they are looking at it now and have received it okay. I'm not travelling until last week of June, so if I don't get it by end of this month then will start escalating

Their website says, their goal is to reply within 3 Business days, in reality they’re replying after a month, that’s insane.

I wish the government and its department know how to utilize their workforce effectively during times like this, retrain and cross train their employees, prioritize and strategize, pivot and align to fill the roles of overburdened and critical services.
This is complete apathy, but if you pay them $300 they will make your passport within an hour.
The complete system is crooked corrupt. Our Canadian leaders will talk about what’s happening in the world, like the most recent, US abortion law, but will keep mum on what’s happening in our own country.

Alright, moved off from the Citizenship line to the Passport line..... sigh

It’s not via email, it’s an online form:

But they take weeks to get back to you.

The number is 1-800-567-6868

See @farmerofthedell ’s post a couple of posts above for info on how to actually get through to an agent. Last time I called it took me 80-odd tries to get through to the queue.

Given that my son and I need to travel in either August or September this year, is it worth just booking our tickets and then when there's less than 26 days until travel, reaching out and requesting a transfer to the local office? Not sure how this works or if there is any way to expedite the process.

Hi Alex, I applied on March 16th (via mail from BC) and so far I have not heard a word from Service Canada. My credit card has not been charged and I have not received the status of my application (which was sent over a week ago). I am so very worried and mad about this whole situation. My partner lives across the border in the US and now I cannot even go visit him.

Just an update that 1 passport out of 3 was delivered to us today.

Our timeline for your reference:
3 applications sent from BC to Mississauga: Feb 28
All 3 delivered: March 2
Two applicants' original documents returned the week of Apr 11
CC charged for all 3: Apr 19
One passport delivered: May 4
