Work permit extension- principal candidate out of country

Hi

My husband is on work permit and me on visitor and kids on study permit. We have applied for extension of our permits and visa. My husband had to leave the country on family emergency and we stayed back. Can we stay in the country when the principal candidate is out of Canada.
