Work permit extension for couple months (from LMIA exemption to need LMIA)

Hi all,
Please help me clarify a question. Do I need LMIA?
As I am currently a postdoc without LMIA and my work permit will be expired in couple months. If I just want to extend 3 months, but I won't be a postdoc anymore. Do I need LMIA to extend my work permit? Even just extend 3 months.

It would be good if you share your experience here. Did you finally need LMIA? What kind of extension was it if you were not going to be a postdoc anymore, just staying at the university as a researcher?
I may need the same thing soon.
