Work permit extension due to passport expiry

I have applied for wp extension, as my passport got renewed. I still have my old wp valid till august, but haven’t received the wp extension yet. After applying for wp extension, i went to my home country and came back. So if i didn’t get the extended wp before the current wp expiry, will i be able to continue work under applied status?
