Very different. All the TRV does is allows you to enter Canada. It does not allow you to stay in Canada beyond the validity of the work permit. If you fail to apply to change your status to a visitor record, you will be out of status in Canada once your work permit expires.
Now suppose I'm currently working and my work permit is about to expire.
Can I directly apply for a visitor record/status and will that directly affect my work permit (as I think a visitor cannot work without a work permit)?
Also what other options do I've to extend my work permit or to increase my CRS score (currently it is 440) and PNP programs that I can apply into?

It doesn't make sense to apply for the visitor record until your work permit is closed to expiring. You can continue working until your work permit expires.
If your employer is willing to obtain an approved LMIA then they would be the main way to extend your work permit. 440 is too low to be selected through EE directly based on recent scores. Look into the requirements for the PNP programs in the province where you are working.
