Why would you encourage someone to avoid paying a fine. The transit police caught them on the day and likely were aware if a machine was out of service. When others don’t pay the tax payers pay.
I am not encouraging. I am just sharing what goes on in Canada.
I was very surprised and disappointed when Police told me to suck it up when my car got hit and run and totalled. Hundreds happen everyday. Nobody is hurt so forget it and be thankful.
There are many instances of this in Canada. The laws are very lax and loose. Lenient. Compassionate to the point of absurdity. The Police know this and that's why they rather only focus their efforts on the hard crime where the law has "some" bite at least.
The large majority of fare evaders are chronic fare evaders and make public transportation much more expensive for everyone else. You likely never use public transportation in Alberta. Nobody should be encouraged to not pay their way.
Actually on the contrary. I have started using transit to get to work now. Especially after my car got totalled in that hit and run. And I see lots of fare evaders every day.
Of course nobody encourages people not to pay their way. But......the police, the system in general does not DISCOURAGE people from evading their fares either.
I mean seriously, what's the penalty? They issue you a ticket. You can choose to never pay it. What is it going to do to you seriously?
As I mentioned it costs way too much to catch people. And fare evasion is considered a very soft crime. Laws in Canada are lax and Canadians in general want it to stay this way.
So @weirdduck don't worry about the fare evasion ticket harming your PR. It won't.
I would encourage you to be law abiding and pay the fine. It is the right thing to do.
But also know that if you don't pay you are not alone. In fact hundreds of thousands of Canadian citizens don't pay. And the law and the system will not do much about it.
No, fare evasion does not make you a normal Canadian. It makes you someone who has no compunction about stealing from the public - after all, who do you think pays for transit?
