Will fare evasion affect my PR application?

I was issued a $175 fine ticket for not paying fare for a public transportation in 2015

The transportation is being operated by Translink in BC.

I recently found out the fine was sent over to a collection agency approximately in 2016.

I never heard from a Collection agency in regards of this.

I'm curious if this can affect my PR sponsorship.

I'm the person who's being sponsored.

No - this won't impact PR. It will just mess up your credit score.

No it wont.

Fare evasion is extremely common. Happens thousands of times every single day in every Canadian city. Makes you a normal Canadian.

I forgot my wallet home and I had to rush to school. Just a mistake that never happened after that incident.

I think there are all kinds of lawyers you can hire to help you with reducing the payment.

There are already lawyers who help with speeding tickets.

Oh, I'm not planning to reduce the amount. It was my own fault so I think I'm responsible for it.

Do not pay the full amount with all the interest and 'penalties' etc. The way collections agencies work is that they buy these debts for a small percentage of the original amount (seriously, tiny amounts, like perhaps they bought your $175 debt for less than ten dollars), and they hope they don't spend as much on the collections process as they evetnually get in cash.

When they contact you, just make an offer - a small offer. Like half the original amount. I would say do not under any circumstances pay more than the original amount. You will get a bigger discount if you can agree to pay whatever amount you agree with them at once.

Make sure you get something from them saying "we consider the debt paid in full".

(I have had friends get contacted by collections agencies for debts they were going to pay and there were mailing and address issues, the banks for some reason sold quickly to collections agency, I guess because they couldn't contact them. The collections agencies would literally make an offer for half the original amount if they were to be paid right away)

Wouldn’t say evasion is a normal Canadian thing to do. Most would never consider it.

It is pretty prevalent. And as usual nobody really bothers to catch these people cos there are too many of them! It costs more to catch them than to just turn the other cheek.

Write to them and say that you couldn't pay the fare that day because the machines were broken

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians use that excuse every single day.

Why would you encourage someone to avoid paying a fine. The transit police caught them on the day and likely were aware if a machine was out of service. When others don’t pay the tax payers pay.

The large majority of fare evaders are chronic fare evaders and make public transportation much more expensive for everyone else. You likely never use public transportation in Alberta. Nobody should be encouraged to not pay their way.
