First off, I did read Leon's wonderful post and have gained a bit of knowledge about this whole immigration topic. But I still have questions, so I thought it would be okay to post this. I have read other similar posts as well and still have questions. Apologies if this seems like yet another re-post.
My girlfriend wants to move to Canada from the US to be with me so we are trying to figure out the best option to make this happen.
From what I understand so far, it would be fastest for me to sponsor her under the Family Class as my common-law partner (we are not married). We do not have common-law status yet, so I have some questions on how to obtain this, and I would also like to know if this is even the best option for us.
Is the best way to obtain common-law status to have her come stay with me for the 6 months that is allowed, and in the 5th month, apply for an extension to get the full year?
If we can get that extension and live together for 1 year, thereby obtaining common-law status, it would be at that point in time that I can apply to sponsor her and apply for her PR? Can she stay in Canada while the application for PR is being processed? Or will she have to at some point return to the States?
I also read about inland and outland and I don't really know the best one, but we are not at that stage yet.
She would like to work whilst here, so that was something else I wanted to ask about. Is this possible? She currently works in the cosmetology field, so no skilled worker options, I don't think.
She has also expressed interest in potentially going to school in Canada. Could she get here on a student visa and go to school while living with me, simultaneously getting common-law, and then apply for PR while still in school through the sponsorship option?
Sorry for so many questions, but I am reeling at the amount of information. It's hard to piece together bits of info from all over the place to get solid answers for our specific case. I am thinking about calling an immigration lawyer or something to get some more info on Monday (hoping for a free consultation haha).
