I have an urgent question and hope you guys can solve it for me.
I will come to Canada as a visiting scholar for two months without any salary from Canada.
I already got an invitation letter and now plan to apply for a temporary visa.
My question is which kind visa I should apply?
Visitor visa or work permit?
Thanks.

You are not required to - as you will be visiting. But it is not a bad idea to buy travel insurance seeing you are going to stay for more than a month - provides you some security and cover for medical emergencies and such. Medical care in Canada can be expensive without insurance/coverage.
Good idea. Thanks.
I got another question. Do I need to provide a police certificate for my temporary visitor visa?
It will take a long time to process in UK. And I'm not sure it's necessary or not.
Can you help me? Thanks.

If you are a UK national you do not need a visa to visit Canada - you are visa-exempt. See the list of visa-exempt countries here:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp
If you are not visa exempt, you may want to visit the country specific site where you will file the application for a visit visa and see the requirements there - some offices have country specific requirements. The document checklist available at cic.gc.ca does not include a requirement for a PCC. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5484E.pdf
