Visa requirement for a US Citizen child

I will greatly appreciate it if someone can provide some advice for the following situation.

I am planning to apply for a study permit for myself and open work permit for my wife. Me and my wife do not have US or Canadian PR or citizenship. My expected length of study in Canada is 4 years. My five years old son will also accompany us. He is a US citizen. I am not sure which visa I should apply for him because US citizens do not need a visitor visa for Canada? I will greatly appreciate your response.

You don't apply for anything for him. When you enter, ask CBSA to issue him a Visitor Record of the same duration as your study permit.

Is this applicable for work permit too?

I currently have a work permit for me and dependent visa for my family. We are expecting another kid and would move post that. I was under impression that on arrival only works for visitor kind of visa but not dependent visa.

There is no such thing as a "dependent visa". Status is granted at the border. People requiring TRVs cannot apply for work permits when entering Canada.
