As long as you have a valid US visa and a valid Canadian work Permit you won't have a problem going in and out US and Canada regardless travelling by air or driving I have done this a lot of times and once in a while you would be interrogated but its fine as long as you are honest I've been interrogated twice and one time for more than 2hrs but all these interrogations happen when entering US and is normal they randomly interrogates. But never have problem entering Canada...one time the US border took my WP and I'm worried that I can't enter Canada but hey everything is computerized now so i entered Canada without further questions.
I have entered Canada while coming from US via Air ( From Pearson Toronto Airport), via road ( from Buffalo and Detroit). On both of these occasions, I didn't have Canadian VISA ( my VISA was expired). I only had valid Work Permit.
YES WE CAN ENTER CANADA WHILE COMING BACK FROM US WITH AN EXPIRED VISA BUT A VALID WP.
This only applies if your journey started in Canada went till US and then you are back in Canada. If you go to your home country, then go to US and thinking of entering Canada from border via US, you would need a valid VISA.
Hi,
My candian VISA is expired but have valid work permit till the end of this year.
Can i re-enter canada after vising US (have valid US visiting VISA) ?
Spoke with an immigration agent as per date Nov. 26th 2012
Agent confirmed by plane or through border by car, a valid work permit is sufficient to enter Canada if and only if you are visiting the United States. No need for a VISA.
So did you guys travel by air without a Valid TRV??? I am in this situation now and I do not have time to apply for TRV...Can you please comment asap???
I did it by Air without a valid Visa. It does not matter.
BUT, you absolutely cannot go to another country from the US (this is a big GOTCHA!!). If you go to for example Mexico when you visit the US, then you will need a valid Canadian Visa to come back to Canada. YOU CAN ONLY GO TO THE US AND THEN COME BACK TO CANADA.

I have a question. My work permit is valid but TRV is expired. I am planning to travel to Dubai from US and re-enter Canada from Seattle. Can I do so?
Thanks

guys to make it clear here.
Last month I went to the US by air. And I re-enterred Canada with no issues with my working permit.
this is okay by air only if you visit the USA. if you go somewhere else you will be denied entry to Canada. Canada border service agent will examine your passport to see if there is a exit stamp out of the US to ensure you have not viisited other countries.
this is the scenario:
at the airport in Canada, us border agent will stick to your passport a special sticker that you must provide to the airline company as a proof that you do not need a visa to re-enter Canada. No companies are allowed to let you enter a flight without the visa or that sticker. that sticker must be shown to flight attendant at the boarding when on your way back to Canada.
you must also show that sticker to the immigration officer at the airport of entry that will then verify your passport if your havent visited other countries. Mexico is not allowed.
