I understand that once Visa is stamped in Passport, one has to enter Cananda within one year. And within 5 years, an individual has to stay in Canada for atleast 3 years to keep the validity. Is it required to have this 3 year stay at a stretch or is it 3 years cumulative stay in 5 years ?

Is stay required 2 years (PR) and 3 years (Nationality) at a stretch or can be over a period of 5 years ? For example, due to some emergency, if someone for example has to go to India for a few days, will the time start again (requirement to stay for 3 years) once he is back from India ?

Dear, its counted on numbers of day..!! so if stay in CANADA for 730 days out of 1895, u r eligible for RENEWING ur PR.
and 1095 days out of 1895, eligible for NATIONALITY.
In between you can travel any where u want.
Just note that its not required to stay in a straight stretch for 730 or 1095 days.
Very well explained...but I have a question here. I heard from an immigration lawyer that to apply for NATIONALITY, we have to stay 3 years out of 4 years in Canada (not 5 years). Is it true?

To become Canadian citizens, adults must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) in the past four years before applying. Children do not need to meet this requirement.

No, unless u work for a Canadian employer in the US.
U need to count your days here in straight 36 months, or in piece-meal. Say,
yr-1 > 10 months
yr-2 > 07 months
yr-3 > 09 months
yr-4 > 11 months Total : 37 months, u r eligible imdtly to apply for citizenship.
The day u r months 36+, u can head for the Citizenship Application, even before 4 yrs. But, remember this eligibility is in the last 4 yrs pd only... counted from the day u apply, backwards.
