If you are in Canada temporarily and you have an international drivers license along with your foreign license, you may be able to drive on it for up to a year depending on the province.
If you need to exchange your license, first find out if your province has an exchange agreement with your home country (google "<your province> drivers license exchange" to find out). If they do, it could be very simple for you. If they don't, you will need to take the test, first written, then road test.
In order to exchange a license or be allowed to take the road test without waiting a year, in some provinces you may need a drivers abstract issued by a drivers license authority in your country. In some, it may be enough to get your foreign license translated to English or French. In some it may even just be enough that you have a foreign license and an international drivers license.
In some provinces you must prove that you in Canada legally such as a student visa and something to prove that you are residing in the province like a bank statement or utility bill mailed to you.
