Hi :),

I am a Belgian student in Molecular Biology. In order to obtain my master's degree (in Belgium), I have to complete an unpaid internship of 4 months in research laboratory. I have been offered a spot at the University of Montréal.

I don't know which permit to apply for:

- Previous students didn't need a work permit and managed to enter Canada under the "Business Visitor" status because they were doing self-funded research. The term "self-funded" is pretty unclear on the CIC website. I will be doing self-funded research as well, and I have to pay for my plane ticket; flat and so on.

- When applying for a work permit, will I be ask to complete the LMIA? I don't think I am taking the opportunity away from someone else (Canadians or permanent resident).

- Should I wait until January 2017 to apply for the EIC? Will I stand a chance with the new "system" of rounds?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Camille

1. They do now. From: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-coop.asp

"For some academic programs, work experience is part of the curriculum. Foreign students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program must apply for a work permit as well as a study "

2. As it is in Quebec, you will also require a CAQ
