Do I apply on their behalf or is it better for them to apply for tourist visa? They will be able to show sufficient ties to India and finances by themselves.

The validity of their visa will be decided by the visa officer who assesses their applications. There is no 10 years' visa. The maximum validity id until the validity of the passport.
Stating a visit of 3-4 months indicates flexibility to stay + no clear visit plans + no strong ties to India.
