Canada is committed to reuniting families and the Government of Canada is seeking to increase the intake of parent and grandparent sponsorship applications from 5,000 to 10,000 per year. In light of this commitment, IRCC will retain the first 10,000 complete applications.

Bad news: CIC received 14000 apps on Jan 4/16 - I misunderstood here. It's since Jan 4.

Apparently they will charge for 10,000 but start processing the first 5K for now, until the new rule comes into effect.
Though, I am just guessing about charging 10,000. It's hard to understand this part. But yes, this definitely means that only 4,000 will be returned back.

I think the 14000 was including those received after 4th Jan as well. It is the total number.

So if your application made it on Monday it should fingers crossed be within the 10000

It would be very unlikely that 10000 applications will be retained now only to be returned later. That would be a political blunder.

I think the govt made a mistake not saying 10000 applications would be accepted before 4 Jan 2016 and are now trying to correct that mistake as quickly as possible.

I understood it a bit differently - mainly because they specify after that they will post more info about the increase... so I think they will charge the first 5000 complete applications, inform us (make a decision and implement a system - hire ppl etc...) and then charge 5000 later down the road.

Either way, it's good news

yeah, the statement is kind of vague (could be this year or starting the following year). The good news for now is that the first 10k will be retained (hoping our applications are included).

i think even morning 5th jan people have chance now!! with 10K retained. Good news to all applicants.
With 15% fail rate ( scan signature, no sign, missing document, NOA incorrect, wrong version , CC charging issue etc)
Not more than 1-2 k app will return with letter that quota is full.

I agree, at least there is a silver lining. We just have to be ready for whatever is the result of our application. There's always next year (though it's much better if our app will not be returned) just in case.
