Hello I am a US citizen and my wife is in Canada. I have applied for Canadian PR. I have all US income and she has all Canadian income (she worked but less than I did)
I tried googling it but I am still unsure of the answer. Can I file married jointly? Because on turbo tax I would get a big return. If I file married separately I would have to pay.
The problem I have is when I type in turbo tax married filing jointly she needs a ssn or an ITN number and there isn't enough time to apply for an ITN number (takes about 6 weeks). Kind of confused with what to do.
Is it legal to file as single to avoid the complication?
Okay after further research I think I can use turbo tax to do the following:
1) Print a PDF of my taxes filed as Joint Married
2) Where the social security # of my wife goes write "NRA"
3) Mail this printed PDF along with form W-7 (request for an ITIN number) to the address listed on Form W-7.
Can someone please confirm that what I wrote above is accurate? Because if I apply for the ITIN # it will take about 4-6 weeks and I'm afraid I won't get it in time to enter it into turbo tax by the April 18 deadline. This way allows me to file the taxes and request an ITIN # at the same time.
Do I have to include her Canadian income somewhere that I am missing?
