Study Permit renewal

My son received his study permit for Canada. The problem was that his US passport will expire April 30 2015. School term is not finished until May or June, so they would only issue his study permit until the expiration date of his passport. The soonest date he can see the American Embassy is March 4. I don't know how long it will take the embassy to give him a new passport. I am reading that he needs to apply for a study renewal within 30 days of its expiration and that he cannot continue his studies if it expires. Please give me advise how to proceed? Is there an office in Calgary for him to apply directly? How long does it take to get the study renewal in Canada? Can he stay and study in Canada if he has applied?

If you apply for permit renewal before expiry and still waiting for the decision, you will have a right under 'implied status' to continue studying and staying as long as the file is under processing. Current processing time for online application is 37 working days.
