I am applying for my spouse PR sponsorship in February 2019 which will usually take 12 months and more. My wife's passport is expiring in April 2020. I am afraid if she does not get her PR in meantime, how can I renew her passport? Can update her passport details while the process is going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

CIC understands that the passport may expire during the process. For the purpose of the application, this is generally okay - you can submit with one passport and have another stamped with the visa - but make sure you do renew it and either keep or have returned the original one so that you can present it if/when necessary. Also be aware of requirements around entry conditions and validity of passports, if there are any applicable.
