My husband got his Student Visa approved recently and will be joining the Canadian university Winter Jan2020 intake.
I am interested in applying for Open Work Permit. Can I apply immediately before he reaches Canada or does he first need to land in Canada , only then I can apply?
Can someone please explain the process and documents involved. Do I need to write a Statement of Purpose for applying for Open Work Permit.

Hey there. Can you tell what happened? Did you get your answer? I could be in a similar situation if my wife gets her study visa for May,2021. Can i apply immediately after she gets her visa approved or i will have to wait till she lands?

No you can apply if she gets approved. Would also add that spouses of students without job offers are currently not allowed to enter Canada even if they have an OWP. This restriction may or may not still be in place.

yet again spouses can apply for SOWP they aren’t always approved. The language gives people the false impression that spouses just need to apply and approval is a given. If your spouse is pursuing an advanced degree like a PhD or masters the chances of approval increase as long as you have the extra funds.

That is true. Infact the rate if rejection is more for SOWP is what i hear. Anyway, atleast it gives me a chance to try once her visa is approved. My documentation is good so hoping it would be considered.
You think once she gets a PGWP and gets 3 pay stubs, chances of SOWP are higher. Maybe i should skip all this for now and apply then?

Yes as long as the job is NOC 0, A or B. You can also apply if she gets her study permit. Just like to stress that SOWP isn't guaranteed because many people are under the false impression that it is guaranteed

Hi there, my spouse is doing a masters program in Canada and when I'm applying for an OWP do we have to show my bank statements only or do we have to show both mine and my spouse's bank statements as proof of funds?
