SO I am interested in sponsoring my spouse that is already working in Canada under a post graduation work permit.
If I sponsor him, does he still have to renew his work permit while we await for an answer from the government regarding if he can get a PR or can he just keep working until we hear back from the government?
If it's expiring this year, one option (although perhaps not the fastest option), would be to submit an Inland sponsorship application along with an Open Work Permit application. This will allow him to legally remain in Canada after the PGWP expires and would give him a new OWP, approximately 4 months after it, along with your Inland application, is received by CIC. The issue would be if his PGWP is expiring any sooner than that...which could be tricky.
Most Outland applicants, including those that are IN Canada already, complete the process substantially faster, but the OWP is not available to them.
