I am currently an international student and I have been with my boyfriend who is canadian citizen for 3 years. We have been living together for a year now . He moved in with me. I placed him on my lease agreement in 2014. which makes this year as being 1 year. We initially wanted to get married but right now we do not have the funds and hes saving up to buy a house. We had a change in ownership in our building and found out that the application to add my boyfriend to the lease was never processed but is in file. The previous company however wrote us a letter saying it was their fault but my boyfriend did make an application to become a tenant from 2014. My boyfriend wanted to sponsor me as common law but with that issue with the lease we are afraid that it might be a problem and cause a rejection. Our relationship is very genuine. I am on his benefits/issurance. We have bank accounts / credit cards . We have to many pictures . We have taken trips to caribbean trips to new york. We are a very genuine couple living tgether and want to spend our life with each other. He doesnt want me to go back to my country and i do not want to go either because i see my life here but we are skeptical to apply with that problem of the lease . Also if we do a courthouse marriage with only immediate family like parents and siblings will that look like its not genuine ? We need help and do not know what to do .

You should be fine...the bank accounts, benefits, travel, etc should be sufficient.

Note of caution: get in the habit of not referring to each other as BF/GF....spouse, partner, husband....anything but BF/GF

Thank you i will keep that in mind . Do you think we should continue as applying common law or get married in a courthouse?

A lease is not required. Do you have mail in both or individual names over the course of the year? Do you have bank/credit card statements going back over the year? Can you get letters from neighbors confirming when he moved in?

Common law is a recognised union in Canada, so marriage isn't necessary. We applied common law, with much less documented proof than you and were approved. Marriage isn't a requirement.

Yes we do have mails and I'm not able to get neighbours to write letters but his family can write letters saying he moved ..thank you guys so much
