Hi All
I sponsored my parents back in 2009 and they landed in Canada on March 29, 2010.
I remember signing a 10 year undertaking forms as part of the application.
I have been told from a friends that 1 year before the expiry of the undertaking that I should get a letter and my parents should also receive letter about preparing to apply for pension and other things since they are both over 65.
we haven't received any information from IRCC or Gov in general about my undertaking which is supposed to expire on March 29, 2020.
whom do I need to contact in order to get more information about my case and the status of my undertaking agreement signed back in 2009
I don’t think any undertaking letter is sent. Your undertaking has nothing to do with their pension. They need to live in Canada for 10 years before they qualify for a partial pension.
Thank you for your response. I apologize maybe I was not clear in my posting:
My parents are both Canadian citizens and lived in Canada since March 2010
my parents landed in Canada and got their PR in March 2010-----> they will finish the 10 yrs living in Canada in March 2020.
my parents undertaking agreement was for 10 years, the undertaking period started when they landed in March 2010 and will finish in March 2020
The question is:
1- When they will be eligible to apply for partial pension without breaking my undertaking agreement.
2- When they will be eligible to apply for any Gov assistance without breaking my undertaking agreement.
Call Service Canada to discuss applying for OAS/GIS. They can be eligible for partial OAS after 10 years in Canada and GIS when sponsorship is over.
Your parents (or you as their representative) can contact IRCC for sponsorship status, but you'll get the info you already know: the sponsorship will end 10 years after the date your parent became PRs. There will be no letter sent to advise that the sponsorship is over...it just ends.

1. As said in my original response above, getting a pension is in no way connected with your undertaking. They will qualify for a partial pension once they have lived in Canada for 10 years. So March 2020.
2. 10 years after they landed and became PRs. So March 2020 as well.

And CPP which is usually the bulk of people’s pension. This family may be surprised by the amount they actually qualify for. Also the reason undertaking is now 20 years.
Most likely there will be no CPP (or very minimal) and 1/4 of OAS amount. However if there is no significant outside income, i.e. current employment income, foreign pension, they will be eligible for maximum GIS, so at the end they will be getting the same amount Canadians who spent all their life on welfare will get.
