I have done a soft landing in Oct-2016 for a week only and then return to my home country. I have done permanent landing in Apr-2018. In 2016 and 2017, I have no Canadian income.
My question is whether i will have to file tax return for 2016 and 2017 too? or only for 2018.

Hi, just to add in the question. If we get an bank account created. Will this situation need me to file taxes even though i am not a resident as of now?

I have a few questions, about taxes as well. Our family (married couple with 1 child) did our soft landing on Feb 2019 and stayed for only a week. Applied for SIN's, did an ocular of the school for next school year (2019-2020) and opened a checking/saving account to transfer some of our funds.
We went back in our country of residency, both of us working. Planning to go return to Canada for good in July 2019.
1. Do we need to file for any tax returns in April 2019, both for our current income outside Canada and the interest earned in the bank's savings?
2. Are we considered non residents at this point?
3. We won't be having any properties outside Canada once we reside in July 2019.

Hello all! same boat in the light of this thread. Do i need to do any sort of filing? As in opening a account with the CRA, or visit a tax clinic? I intend to land in 18th April 2019 (did soft landing in 8 April 2018, and have the PR card with us )
Hi,
I did soft landing in June 2018, applied for SIN, PR Card, stayed in Canada for 4 days and returned to my home country. I got internal transfer in my existing company and subsequently I moved to Canada in October 2018. Now when I am filing return for 2018, there is a question "Did your residency changed in the year" and "Date of entry in Canada". I am confused which date should I enter for my entry in Canada (June 2018 or October 2018)?

It depends whether you established any significant ties in Canada when you landed June. Did you purchase a property? Did your family stay in Canada while you return to your home country? If the above are true, then I would say your date of entry is June, otherwise October.
