Hi,

I'm new to this noticeboard but have found many of the posts rather useful and interesting.

My husband and I are in the process of applying for a Perm Residence visa. We will be submitting our applications in the next month or so as we are waiting to have medicals carried out in Edinburgh.

Basically I am looking for some information and advice around job opportunities in Calgary, Alberta. My husband is a time served joiner/carpenter with 20 years experience in all areas of construction - he has a college qualification. We have read that Alberta are facing a trades shortage over the next few years. I am a university graduate in Business but have spent the last 8 years working for local government in housing and homelessness focusing on policy development and operational management particularly in relation to homeless prevention. I see that a lot of money has been allocated to homeless prevention in relation to the 10 year plan. Alberta certainly seem to be leading Canada in this front.

I could waffle on forever but any advice/info on the job market would be very much appreciated.

We are heading out to Calgary for 10 days in May to check the place out and we hope to get an idea of the cost of living, where to live and what jobs/salaries we can expect. Please dont get the impression that our move is job related we are very much looking for a change on the whole and after spending the last 10 years travelling we are keen to experience somewhere else to live and we have always heard great things about Canada.

Kind regards

1. If you haven't submitted your application to Sydney NS, why are you having medicals? That only happens after you are approved and the forms are sent by CHC.
2. You know that your spouse has to have at least one year as a supervisor under Carpentry in the past 10 to qualify? http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/apply-who-instructions.asp#list
