Hi folks,

So I originally came to Canada on a temporary foreign worker permit - it expired in June of this year, along with my SIN. I applied to change my conditions of my stay from worker to visitor as we are waiting on my permanent residency, so I know that I've got implied status in the country until I get an answer for that - but my question is regarding my SIN and how that works with healthcare?

I'm covered under my fiance's employer - does that still hold true even if my SIN is no longer valid? Are they able to update my SIN once I become a visitor or do I no longer hold a SIN? Do I even need one since I'm not working?

If don't have a work permit you don't need a sin. I was on study permit, didn't have one, now I have an OWP with temporary sin. You will get a permanent one once landed as a PR.

Not sure what you mean by this, as provinces give you healthcare, not employers. Employers only offer benefits and supplemental health packages (so things like getting glasses, massages, orthopedics, etc).

If someone got sick and had to go to the ER or spend time in a hospital, no employer policy will pay for this. You need provincial healthcare. So if you will no longer have provincial coverage, you really need to get some private travel medical insurance to cover you.

And for your partner's employment benefits, they won't care if you have a valid SIN or not. However some employer benefit providers DO require that you have provincial coverage first, before you are eligible to be on the employer's plan.

Yeah, sorry, I'm not totally sure how it works! How do I know if I have provincial coverage? When I had my work permit, I was paying monthly for it, but then once my fiance started his job, his employer started paying for it. At what point would I lose my provincial coverage?

You should have a provincial health program identification card or number that you registered for and received shortly after you landed. In Quebec they look like this:

In most provinces, people with work permits are eligible for provincial coverage on the first day they arrive Canada, except I think Ontario which has a 3 month wait period. So you shouldn't have been paying.

You can call the office that administers health coverage for your province, explain your situation and see what they say. Also have prove that you have applied for PR... some provinces will give you coverage after a certain stage of your PR application.
