My Russian wife has a Patronymic name, named after her father. It is not like our 'middle' names as they are given to us by our parents. Her patronymic name is not translated to English in her international passport and I'm told that this name will not accompany her in Canada and is possibly only a Russian thing.
I'm not sure if I should remove this name from the application and simply keep her name as FIRST and LAST (not entering patronymic as a middle name).
Anyone have an answer to what we should actually do?
I wrote down my patronymic name only as "other names".
"IVANOVNA (patronymic)"
The reason I did it because this patronymic name appears in translated documents: birth certificate, etc.
rusbear, Where are you in the application process? What you say makes sense...So you only have first and last name? Just don't want to have any issues down the road.
Did you translate your first page of international passport? It only asks for notarized photocopy and the only translation of her patronymic name is with the notarization of her internal passport.
I'm inlander and it seems that the kit of documents for applying in canada class much smaller and simpleer than yours.
I've never translated the 1st page of my passport cause nobody asked me to do that. And I dont see any reason to translate it because it has information in both languages (russian/english). Well, maybe accept place of birth.

Does she want to keep using her patronymic in Canada, as a pseudo-middle name? If so, keep it on the application as her middle name. My brother-in-law is from Russia, and he and his family have their patronymics on all their Canadian ID as their middle names. If anyone asks, he explains that they're not really middle names, but no one does.
You could also put it in the 'other names' section, and explain it is the patronymic. If the app is going through Moscow, they'll know what it is.
I think you should keep it somewhere in the application, in particular because it is on her Russian ID and other evidence you submit.
You can also attach an explanation to the forms, stating you have put her patronymic as her middle name (or in the 'other names' section, but that it is actually her patronymic.
My husband's name has a similar problem - he has an English name, but that is not the name anyone actually uses. They use what he calls his 'tribal name'. This on his passport looks like his middle name, but it isn't really. I just filled the forms in putting it where they asked for middle name.
