quick question about my status as a resident in Canada:

If i go traveling abroad for longer than 6 months, will that affect my status of residing in Canada? Will I have to say that I'm currently residing outside of Canada and provide proof that I will re-establish myself in Canada?
I know that I'm aloud to travel without losing my status as a resident in Canada. Does it matter though how long I'm abroad?

A resident of canada must live in Canada for 2 out of 5 years to maintain status.

However if you're planning to sponsor someone, you must remain in canada throughout the process. Short trips out of canada are allowed, 2 to 3 weeks maximum I would think. You certainly cannot leave for 6 months while sponsoring someone if you're a PR yourself.

thanks for your reply!

I am, however, a Canadian citizen :) just wondering about my residential status. When and how will I be considered living exclusively outside of Canada? If I travel abroad for more roughly 7 months, that doesn't mean I reside exclusively outside of Can and don't need to prove my intentions to return, right? Just want to make sure!

A citizen traveling abroad as a tourist will not be considered to be residing exclusively outside of Canada.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question.
If you keep a canadian mailing address and travel as a tourist you should be fine.

we had the same problem. Sponsor not living in Canada for more than 6 months, but also not residing abroad, more travelling. So we just included proof of re-establishing anyway and aswered the Question: Are you currently living in Canada with a NO. But we didn't check "residing exclusively outside Canada". I think that's the safest. But we are not approved yet.
