nah you won't get back to the US, you will be allowed to enter to Canada and you may appear in front of a court in 15 days so come prepared with all your evidence that supports that you are a refugee. In case your case was rejected, you may appeal it at a federal court in Canada. Keep in mind you need to hire a good immigration lawyer and spend money $$$$..
you will not be sent back. the officer will determine your eligibility based on your current situation. i.e why you want to seek refugee protection in canada at the border.
whether your sponsorship application was denied in the past doesn't matter at that point in time.
it is when you go for your refugee hearing that refugee board will determine your case and any other issues as regard your previous sponsorship application.
Personally, I think the powers that be will believe it to simply be a way round the correctly refused sponsorship and reject the refugee application. Hopefully the OP will let us know how it goes.

I understand they have to leave, but many do not want to leave so what if they just go into hiding? Does the government track them down and remove them? Or they will just stay illegally forever not paying taxes etc... just so wrong on so many levels...

They spend their lives waiting for the knock on the door as CBSA come for them. Everyone they meet or work with might be the person who reports them. If they upset their employer, they may be handed over, so they have to do what they are told, with no labour protection. The list goes on. Who would want to live like that?
