I am in the process of getting reference/experience letter from my employer. I am working for a company X in Canada since Jan 2015 as a software developer. Though my employment is with company X, I am working at a client location which is company Y.
Question: In my case do I have to get any reference letter from company Y? Or is it sufficient if the reference letter given by X says he is working in a client location?

You'll need a letter from the company that issues your paystubs. That's who you'll include as your employer in your profile. The company you work for will be able to determine your job duties and send them to the company that issues your paystubs to include in your letter.

You should get a letter from each. Company X is your employer, and will need to provide dates of employment, job title, salary & benefits info. But they do not actually witness you performing the work, so the client letter (Company Y) would provide the info on location, hours worked per week, and job duties/responsibilities.
