I am a Canadian citizen and my husband holds a pr card that will expire on October 17. We are currently in Europe since June and want to return to Canada before his card expires, in hopes to avoid applying for a travel document. He has not applied for a PR Card renewal as of yet. We will be traveling back together and I am wondering if they will give us problems at the airport because he has not applied to renew his card as of yet ?

As long as PR card is valid on date of travel, that's all that matters
Also carry proof that you've been cohabiting all this time out of Canada, in case question of his residency obligation comes up.
