My fiancée is a family physician and she is about to apply for a work permit to work as a family doctor in Ontario.
1- On average, how long does it take to obtain the work permit?
2- Once she is on a work permit, how long does it take to obtain permanent residency?
3- Does the period she's been on work permit count towards the 3-year requirement for citizenship?
I really appreciate your help and advice.
Many thanks.
1. She has to find an employer willing to apply for a labor market opinion(LMO). The job has to be posted for at least 2 weeks(including nationally) and they have to show recruitment efforts(i.e. no Canadian citizen or permanent resident could do the job). If the LMO is approved, she can apply for a work permit.
2. To apply under CEC, she needs 2 yrs of full-time experience. There is talk that it may be reduced to 1 yr. There are also provincial nominee programs, and the skilled worker program.
3. First, she has to be a permanent resident for at least 2 years before she can apply for citizenship. Half of the time she spent in Canada before obtaining permanent residence will be counted up to 1 year.
